Spanish Refugees-Basque Children
At least 25,000 Basque children were evacuated during the Spanish Civil War. Most went to France, others to Belgium, Mexico, the Soviet Union, Switzerland and England. This website provides information on the 4,000 who went to Great Britain. The website includes historical information about the British refugee camps, colonies, and repatriation. It has a wealth of photos. Website in English.

A non-profit association of anthropologists in the Basque Country, Ankulegi is open to everyone who is interested in anthropology, whether professionals or not. The acronym Ankulegi comes from the Basque words Antropologia, Kultura Eta Gizartea (anthropology, culture and society). The association's aims are to foster anthropology as a scientific discipline, promote anthropological research, publish a journal of anthropology, support professional and educational activities, provide a space for members of the association to meet and debate, and interact with related institutions. Revista International de los Estudios Vascos
REIV is published by Eusko Ikaskuntza-Sociedad de Estudios Vascos, and is a premier multi-disciplinary journal of Basque Studies. It was first published from 1907-1936, when it was stopped due to the Spanish Civil War and Franco's rule, reappeared in 1983, and has been published continually since then. The Ethnographic Museum of Navarre "Julio Caro Baroja" is located in the Monastery of Irache. While it has not yet opened its doors to the public, its website is well organized, and gives a good photographic tour of artifacts in the collection.

Politics and Peacemaking
Covite - Colectivo de Victimas del Terrorismo en el Pais Vasco
Besides being a support group for victims of terrorism in the Basque Country, Covite holds among its objectives the defense of basic democratic principles, respect for the rule of law and attainment of a social climate in which all citizens can exercise their rights in liberty, free of threat and coaction. In order to achieve peace, Covite considers it necessary that those who resort to political violence atone for their crimes, recognize and pay for the harm they have done to thousands of innocent people, and make amends for the pain inflicted on Basque society in particular and Spanish society in general. Elkarri
Elkarri is a social movement for dialog and accord in the Basque Country. It sees its mission as that of contributing to the peace process. It came into being in 1992 to promote and facilitate dialog between all sides as a solution to violence and political conflict. Elkarri's website provides a wealth of written material, including a high-quality journal, monographs and campaign documents published by the organization, and a monthly bulletin on the latest political developments in the Basque Country and initiatives based on the principles of nonviolence and dialog. Foro Ermua
A civic movement that emerged in the Basque Country to build upon the popular uproar following ETA's kidnapping and assassination of a city councilmember of Ermua, Miguel Ángel Blanco, in 1997. It calls for a radical opposition and condemnation of ETA and recognition and support for the victims of its terrorism, resolution of the political conflict within the framework established by the Spanish constitution and Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country, rejection of any kind of political negotiation with ETA, and unity between the constitutionalist parties to assure the definitive defeat of terrorism. Its periodic papers, published in journal format, are an excellent resource for understanding all who support this perspective. Website in Spanish and French.

Gernika Gogoratuz Peace Research Center
Gernika Gogoratuz was founded in 1987 by the Basque Parliament in remembrance of the 50th Anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika. Its mission is to enrich the symbol of Gernika by remembering and honouring the history of Gernika and by contributing to a just and reconciliatory peace in the Basque Country and worldwide. The peace center stresses conflict transformation, reconciliation, respect, facilitation of mediation skills, the culture of peace, the pedagogy of peace, and dialogue. Gesto por la Paz
Gesto por la Paz ("The Association for Peace in the Basque Country") is a pacifist movement independent from any political party or institution. It emerged as an organized civic response against the use of violence for political aims. The most widely known actions of the association are its silent gatherings or 'Gestos por la Paz' after a political killing, from which it takes its name. The gatherings denounce the taking f human life, regardless of the authors, circumstances or condition of the victim.
