8. SOCIAL COMMITMENT: ASSOCIATIONS AND SOLIDARITY

We believe that the way institutions are run should cover the interests and needs of the population. We want to encourage the commitment of the population to its local and global community by means of the formation of associations, so that the groups which have been formed are an effective force in social and political activity. Therefore Plazandreok will work to aid existing groups and foment the creation of new associations and groups formed according to age or special interests. Concretely, Plazandreok will especially encourage women’s groups, furthering activities aimed at urging women towards areas of educational, collective and public interest. Plazandreok will also promote and encourage the participation of women’s groups and associations in the Women’s Councils as well as in other Councils as they are created.

Our way of doing politics, the way we understand relationships between people and communities, causes us to conceive of local institutions as being concerned with their own improvement and well being, but also as concerned with the world in which we find ourselves. Development alone is only such if it contributes to the well being of some in a way that does not prevent the well being of others. This is not the actual state of things, in which 80% of the world’s wealth is in the hands of 20% of the population. We believe that our responsibility towards developing countries requires that we act with solidarity. For this reason Plazandreok agrees that a percentage of local income be used for projects of development and cooperation. The goal which is presently proposed is 0.7% of the budget. We believe that we should go even further and we propose that 1% of the budget be devoted to these projects. The money thus collected will be used in depressed areas for projects which foster the development and self management of the population which receives it.

PROPOSALS

  1. Provide meeting places for different organized groups. Take advantage of educational facilities so that they can be used by the general population after working hours.

  2. Cooperative projects should take into account the specific situation of Women and their needs as well as their potential, in order not to damage them but rather to take advantage of their capacities. In these geographical areas too women play a fundamental social and financial role, be it in the form of autonomous development enterprises or in the form of enterprises of the management of available resources. It should not be forgotten that the poorest of the poor are always women: they carry out two thirds of the work in the world but receive only a tenth of the world’s wealth.

  3. Financed projects should be aimed at generating sustainable development. The environment in which they function should be respected and they should answer to criteria of low cost and independence in financing and energy source; They should be in harmony with their social and cultural surroundings.

  4. A small part of the budget aimed at cooperative activities should be devoted to the realization of campaigns which increase the awareness of the population concerning the situation of others and the fostering of attitudes of solidarity with them.

  5. Knowledge of other peoples will be fostered, especially of those in need, from an egalitarian, positive and creative point of view. Following this way of thinking, sister cities will be chosen from developing countries, and action will be taken to foster visits of people from these places in order to make a better understanding of their actual situation possible.

  6. The Councils of Cooperation will collaborate with Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
