4. HEALTH AND SPORTS

HEALTH

The principal Institutional framework in charge of health care in the Basque autonomous region is Osakidetza. Its activity is centered almost entirely on therapeutic medicine, which we understand as defining health as the absence of illness. From this limited perspective health is the exclusive domain of the health institutions. However, we propose to expand the meaning of "health". Based on the definition of health used by the World Health Organization as a state of well physical, psychological and social well being, Plazandreok considers that local institutions, as the managers of multiple issues which affect the population, have much to do in this field in so far as they can favor, help to create and increase the well being of the people, thereby assuring healthy cities and villages.

The health care and social systems are independently administered and financed, without coordinating elements which would allow complementary and harmonious activity between the two. This lack of social/health care coordination has a negative effect on many people, given that the problems of many groups need a coherent, global focus. For this reason Plazandreok proposes coordination among the institutions so as to provide joint services to groups with specific needs such as persons with chronic disabling illnesses, the bedridden, the aged with limited mobility, those who need rehabilitation, etc.

PROPOSALS

  1. To promote the development of healthy life habits. That is, the elimination of negative habits (drug use, overwork, stress) and the acquisition of positive habits (moderate exercise, adequate rest, relaxation, smiling), with special emphasis on the development of a healthy diet. This should be complemented by efficient measures of control and inspection of the conditions of the storage, sale and consumption of food.

  2. To promote curiosity and information about human physiology and create a positive attitude towards information about the body.

  3. To give special attention to the female population in the encouragement of a positive attitude towards the female body and its vital development. It is necessary to regain control of our bodies and to reevaluate their forms and functions based on what they are worth in themselves and not on the dictates of fashion and publicity. The current pressure of publicity tremendously affects many women who, in the attempt to imitate "ideal" figures, find themselves increasingly affected by pathologies such as bulimia and anorexia.

  4. To advance the realization of continuing sex education courses for different ages and groups, with the understanding that sexuality is that part of a person which is manifest in the experience of pleasure in a way that is not exclusively heterosexual. It is necessary to make a positive valorization of people’s sexual diversity as something enriching.

  5. To promote group educational activities which facilitate an improvement in interpersonal relationships by fostering techniques of communication, non-violent conflict resolution, cooperation, etc.

  6. To work for a global educational project on respect for others and for one’s self by furthering actions which increase self-esteem, especially in women. Special attention needs to be given to the psychological well being of women, especially those woken who need it most whether it be because they are alone or because they bear an excessive degree of economic and emotional responsibility.

  7. To reinforce conditions which favor health and to eliminate conditions which threaten different dimensions of the physical environment: control of drinking water, beaches and swimming pools, carrying out of the regulations concerning noise, etc.

SPORTS

Sports should be the source of an increase in personal and social well being, serving as a tool for education and socializing. We believe that the fundamental principals concerning sports are to favor access to and participation in physical activity for the entire population and especially in the case of women.

Plazandreok considers sports as a physical activity which contributes to increase the health level of the population. It is a counterweight to the sedentary nature of many jobs, it allows awareness of one’s body, it favors psychological well being, lowers stress and aggressiveness and reduces the risk of many illnesses.

Sports are also an effective educational, socialization and coexistence tool which encourages solidarity, steadfastness, strength and the valorization of one’s own limits and achievements.. It favors interaction with others, serves as a link connecting people from the same area as well as those from different regions, cultures or countries. These benefits are derived from the practice of enjoyable, non-competitive physical activity which is adjusted to personal circumstances. We value sports which are competitive and practiced by an elite group for their importance as spectacles and as examples of personal excellence; but the previously mentioned benefits are not derived from this latter type of sports.

Taking into account the lesser participation of women in sports, we shall work to achieve the elimination of sexism in their practice, and we shall not participate in acts, competitions or other sports events which are discriminatory or sexist. We shall promote a policy of positive action which guarantees the continuous practice of sports in all the stages of women’s lives.
