| Street Zinema 2007
Urban countercultures audiovisual festival.
From September 6th to 9th at San Sebastian
Coordination: Perros Callejeros Films.
Production: Arteleku-Gipuzkoa County Council.
Collaboration: Ernest Lluch Culture Centre–San Sebastian City Council, Kutxa, Dogway Magazine, Jart Factory, Edición Limitada, Tutti Pazzi Records, Parafernalia Skateboards.
There is a radical and subtle change to the contents and programme of the fourth International Street Zinema Festival. As skaterboarders who are active in other youth cultural scenes, the people involved in preparing this project decided to extend the activities that we organise throughout the year. Publishing Calle Magazine, concerts featuring La Jaula de Grillos the hip-hop collective from San Sebastian, Blog&Destroy a meeting point for skaters who are users of the web 2.0, publishing and distributing a DVD with three independent skateboarding videos together with Dogway Magazine, the Graffiti Film Festival dedicated to disseminating videos about illegal graffiti, or the Animal Público y Monstruo Expo collective exhibitions are just some of the ongoing proposals.
For over a century, artistic and youth urban countercultures has been demanding the end to the distinction between the so-called “highbrow” and “popular culture” (which is understood to be a proposal, rather than a defunct artistic avant-garde). From Romanticism to Anarchism – without forgetting Futurism, Dadaism and punk culture - to finish in the psychogeography of the graffiti author, or the non-intellectualized criticism that any skateboarder makes of his architectural surroundings. In Street Zinema, we are aware of the emancipating possibilities of re-appropriating public space and we are convinced that we can now find multiple anthropological, aesthetical and cultural aspects in the skateboard videos (and in graffiti, street-art or the "parkour”) to study and analyse.
Despite the huge commercialisation and globalisation of the so-called “youth cultures”, the counter-dominance of contemporary urban languages continues to persevere. It seems that nobody is taking time to think about the direction that skateboarding will take to finally become part of western culture as a vehicle for social change, beyond the world of street-wear. Therefore, we will yet again showcase some of the most interesting independent works that we have encountered. Welcome and enjoy…
