Herrán (or Herranz or Herraiz or Herrainz)

These last names are variant of a same one and old lineage that the author Francisco Lozano considers original of France, adding that in the days of the King of Castile Don Alfonso X the Wise person, fifty named horsemen Herrán arrived from France, which arranged to help to the mentioned Monarch in the conquest of Jerez de la Frontera, but none of them executed head orders coming out of them , reason why they put under the hazard which of the fifty had to be the captain. For this they used the dices, falling the control to Martín Herrán that, in opinion of Lozano, took blood of Princes of Beaudemón. That Martín was indicated so much in that day, that Don Alfonso X the Wise person did many Mercys to him, among others, to add to its coat of arms a quarter with the cross of Calatrava between four stars. More ahead we will describe these arms.

The chronicler Jose Alfonso de Guerra differs from the origin that Lozano attributes to the lineage that occupies to us, and says, that first in taking the Herraiz last name they were horsemen who helped to Don Alfonso XI in the battle of the Salado , and descending of them settled down in Navarre, where they founded well-known house-palace of ancient noblemen.

Doing without these origins, that must not have, in any case, another foundation which the one of the legend, is certain that the Herrán lineage (and its variants of Herranz, Herraíz and Herrainz) come from the villa of Herrán (whose name took by last name), of the Valley City council of Tobalina, in the judicial party of Villarcayo (Burgos), extending soon, by the provinces of Santander, Biscay, Leon, Soria, Logroño, Madrid and others.

In the Mountain of Santander they created those of this lineage houses in the villa of Tudanca, of the judicial party of Cabuérniga; in the place of Lombraña, of the Council of Poblaciones, in the same judicial party, and the one of Bárcena de Cudón, of the Council of Miengo, in the judicial party of Torrelavega. From this last house a line established in America sprang, as we see later.

In the city of Orduña, in Biscay, it had also noble house de la Herrán, and, according to Labayru, they came from the Valley of Mena, that is indeed where it is the place of Herrán, of the mentioned judicial party of Villarcayo. Also there is in Biscay a called district Herrán, that belongs to the City council of Carranza, in the judicial party of Valmaseda, and whose name must be related to the one of the lineage.

ARMS

Those that appears with greater antiquity are those than Francisco Lozano says that he brought the horseman Martín Herrán or Herrant, mentioned in the beginning of this information, and that helped with forty nine soldiers to Don Alfonso X the Wise person in Conquest of Jerez de la Frontera. These arms are organized in divided shield: 1.st, of azure, with a piece of wall embattled of its colour, surmounted of a flower of Lis of gold and position in a meadow of sinople, in which they appear thistles of the same colour, and 2.nd, of gules, with a cross of Calatrava, of gold, edged of four stars of silver. General Bordure of this metal, with eight ermines of sable.

The arms contained in the first quarter of that shield, are those that already the repeated Martín Herrán used, and the contained ones in the second quarter, those that Don Alfonso X the Wise person rendered to him in prize to the services granted to him in the conquest of Jerez de la Frontera.

Escudo de armas

In the file of evidences of nobility of the Horseman of Calatrava Juan Manuel González de Cossio, its said that the family house of Herrán, in the villa of Tudanca, had east shield: « a castle with a lion at the door and a man armed in front of him with an arrow shooter in the left hand and three arrows in the right, and a great tree on a rock, with three flowers of Lis »

The same house showed this other shield: « On water waves, a castle righ sided of a lion, tied at the door; in the skilful angle of the head, a flower of Lis, and underneath this one, two saltires put in situation of fess, that are upon the lion, and in three left angle saltires, also in fess, and underneath them a tree »

A third shield was seen in the mentioned house of Tudanca, and was: « Quarterly: 1.st, a castle with trained lion; 2.nd, a flower of Lis; 3.rd, a soldier with arc and arrow, and 4.th, a tree with two rearing wolves. Bordure with saltires in flanks and end, and this legend in the chief: Herrán. »

The house of the place of Lombraña also brought shield quarterly: « 1.st, a tree with a tied and rearing lion; in the head a star; more to the left, a castle, and in flank, eight stars put in two woods. This quarter is of Ravage. And 2.nd, in the left flank of the head, three little flags, and in end, two stars; average party, with the tree and the rearing lion. This is of Herrán and Vélez. »

The Herrán of Biscay, which came from the Valley of Mena, had this other shield quarterly: 1.st and 4.th, of gold, with three put horseshoes of azure in triangle, and 2.nd and 3.rd, of gules, with four gold fess, that some authors call delfs.

Escudo de armas

Equal arms used the named Herraiz, increased, in divided shield, with a second quarter of gules with a fess of silver accompanied by two bendy boilers of gold and sable and gringolé of sinople, put one in the top and the other one in the bottom. General Bordure of gules, with eight saltires of gold.

These arms had in the crest the following motto: « the Herraiz de Herrán - by his God and its King they will die and win. » Motto that verifies that the Herraiz came from the house of Herrán of the villa of Herrán (Burgos) in the judicial party of Villarcayo.

Those of mountains of Leon brought slanting or manteld shield: 1.º, of gules, with three water-lily leafs of silver put in triangle; 2.º, of gold, with three flowers of Lis of azure also put in triangle, and 3.º, of silver, with a lion rampant of its colour.

Escudo de armas

The house of Herrainz, of the villa of Ventrosa de la Sierra, in La Rioja, showed: In silver field an oak of sinople, and crossed to the trunk, a lion of its colour.

The Herrán of Almeria, used shield quarterly: 1.st and 4.th, of gold, with a boiler of sable, and 2.nd and 3.rd, of gules, with a gold tower.
