"Click" for enlarge    The "Scholla Cantorum de Ntra. Sra. del Coro", which in 1976 became known as KORUKO AMA BIRJINAREN ESKOLA, and more simply as "ESKOLA", was founded at the beginning of 1940 by JUAN URTEAGA The first performance of the group took place during Easter Week of 1940. The 10th of April of 1940 is considered the official date of the foundation of the group.

 During the first years it was dedicated exclusively to sacred music. The most important of their activities was the performance of the "Estampas de la Pasión" during Easter Week and Christmas at the Gran Kursaal. Due to the excellent quality of the performance it was shown in different capitals of the spanish state (Madrid, León, Bilbao, Vitoria,...)

After the fifthies the dance group, at the request of the councils and festival's commissions, started offering performances without the choir during Patron Saint Celebrations and Festivals. Nevertheless they continue performing together in several operas: Amaya, Txanton Piperri, Oleskari zarra, La Dama de Anboto. Of special interest was the participation in the Amaya Opera directed by its author, Jesús Guridi, in 1952

During the following years performances were given all over the Basque Country and abroad. At this time an important research work recovered our traditional music and dances, exchanging knowledge with other Dance Groups and individuals, learning the rhythms and steps of the dances in their environment and origin in order to maintain the culture of our country.

Afther 1983 the necesity was raised of presenting the popular folklore with a high escenic character, always maintaining the original roots. Together with the creation of new choreographies, following the tradition of ESKOLA, has brought great success at both national and international leves.

In 1990 ESKOLA celebrated the semicentennial of its fundation and a book was edited with the most important aspects of its long history. Likewise, and included in other important events, two extraordinary concerts were offered in the Victoria Eugenia Theater, a frequent site of the group's most well-recieved performances, accompanied by the Council Conservatoire Orchestra. More than 300 people took part in the performance obtaining a gran success.
