The objective of this course is to explain the basic
concepts of the Common Law legal system as used in Britain, Ireland, the U.S.A. and most
of Canada, Africa and Asia.
To do this the course examines:
- THE COURTS OF THE JURISDICTION.
- LEGISLATION AND STATUTORY INTERPRETATION.
- JUDICIAL PRECEDENT.
- APPEALS.
- TRIAL BY JURY.
- THE LEGAL PROFESSION.
- PRIVATE AND PUBLIC LAW REMEDIES.
- CONTRACT AND CRIMINAL LAW.
The course involves studying the use of the English Language in a
variety of authentic legal documents.
During the course the students will practice the techniques needed to
understand legal English and to be able to communicate confidently with
lawyers and clients.
The course is taught as a lecture with complimentary seminars. The amount of class
hours of the course can vary between 15-40 hours. The size of the class is also flexible.
The students should have an intermediate level in English.
